Durango's biggest annual events are Snowdown (January 29 to February 7, 2027), the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic (Memorial Day weekend, May 29 and 30, 2027), the Durango Bluegrass Meltdown (April 16 to 18, 2027) and Music in the Mountains (every July). The rest of the year fills in around them. Dates below come from each event's own site, as checked in October 2026. Where an event hasn't announced 2027 yet, you'll see "usually" and a month.

What's on in winter?
Snowdown is the one that matters to people who live here. The 2027 festival runs ten days, January 29 to February 7, with the theme "Chillin' With My Villains." That's the lineup on snowdown.org:
- Follies shows: January 29 and 30, February 5 and 6
- Fashion Do's & Don'ts: February 3
- Light Parade: February 5
- Chili Cookoff and Bloody Mary contest: February 6
Ska Brewing releases the official Snowdown beer in December. Visitors are welcome, but remember this is a town of about 19,000, and a big chunk of it is at the same event. If you want to see what Durango really is, January beats July.
The ski season runs alongside. Purgatory plans to open November 20, per KRQE. Downtown absorbs the après crowd, and the brewpubs, Steamworks and Carver, fill first. Prefer something quieter? Balcony Bar & Grill above Main Avenue keeps its own corner of the bar scene.
What's on in the holidays?
The holidays start on the train. The Polar Express runs November 20 through January 2, and the Cascade Canyon Winter Train runs November 20 through April 30, both listed by downtown Durango. Book early.
Singing with Santa lights the community tree at Buckley Park on Friday, November 27, 2026, at 5:30 p.m. The Durango Farmers Market has a Fall Celebration on November 21 and a Winter Market and Gift Fair at the fairgrounds on December 12. Downtown also bundles its seasonal events under the name HOLiDAZZLE, though I could not confirm 2026 dates for that umbrella.
What's on in spring?
April belongs to bluegrass. The Durango Bluegrass Meltdown returns April 16 to 18, 2027. It plays at venues all over downtown rather than in one park, and you can often catch jam sessions in public spaces. The 2026 edition was its 30th, per the festival.
Then comes May, the busiest month of the spring. The farmers market opens for the season, and the Iron Horse takes over Memorial Day weekend. The race has run since 1971, says its own site, and it challenges riders to beat the narrow gauge steam train to Silverton, climbing two 10,000-foot passes. In 2027 the schedule is Saturday, May 29, for the road race and the Purgatory tour, and Sunday, May 30, for the gravel and mountain bike races. Book dinner early.
Animas River Days tends to land right at the turn from May into June. Picture kayakers and rafters racing through the course at Santa Rita Park while the whole bank cheers. Watching costs nothing.
What's on in summer?
Summer runs at full volume. Two festivals stand out.
Music in the Mountains is the classical festival. Its 40th season ran July 9 through August 2, 2026, with free Mobile Stage concerts alongside the orchestra programs. Expect 2027 to land in July too, but wait for the official announcement.
Fiesta Days is the old-timer. It started in 1935 as the Spanish Trails Fiesta. These days it means a rodeo, a queen contest and a BBQ and pie auction out at the La Plata County Fairgrounds, say the organizers. Pencil in July, and dress for dust.
Each Saturday the Durango Farmers Market sets up in the TBK Bank parking lot at 259 W 9th Street, from 8 a.m. to noon, May 9 through October 31 in 2026. There's also a "2nd Saturdays on Main" market on the 900 to 1100 blocks of Main Avenue (the 2026 dates were May 9 through October 10). Our farmers market guide has more.
On warm evenings, the taprooms fill up. Animas Brewing and Ska Brewing have the outdoor seating. For music most nights, check The Subterrain on Main Avenue.
What's on in fall?
Ask a long-time local about fall and you'll get a smile. The tourists thin out, October stays sunny more often than not, and the calendar fills with events the town throws for itself.
The Durango Cowboy Gathering is the headliner. Held in downtown for 37 years, the 2026 edition runs September 30 through October 3 with poetry, music, storytelling and horse events, per the organizers. The 2027 dates haven't been posted.
The aspens also work like an event. Color usually peaks from late September into early October. Our fall colors guide covers timing and drives. In the evenings, walk the gallery stretch of Main Avenue, where Azul Gallery, Blue Rain Gallery and BluesMtnSoul often host openings.
Where do you find the current schedule?
No single calendar has everything. Use the Durango Area Tourism Office and durango.com's event calendar for the big annual events. For live music, check venues directly: Wild Horse Saloon, El Rancho Tavern and Balcony Bar & Grill each book their own nights. For art events, gallery websites and social accounts are fastest.
Browse the directory's events and arts-and-entertainment pages for venues with active programming. Planning around the weather instead?
