Durango Healthcare: Hospitals, Clinics, Providers

5 min read Last updated: October 16, 2026

Durango's main hospital is CommonSpirit Mercy Hospital, at 1010 Three Springs Blvd. It's a Level III trauma center, and its ER never closes. The other is Animas Surgical, a physician-owned surgical hospital on Rivergate Lane. Below: where each one is, who else is nearby, and how to find a doctor, dentist or therapist without losing a week to phone tag. This is a map of who's where. It isn't medical advice.

Where are the hospitals in Durango?

Two main ones. Mercy is the big one. Almost everything else in local care, from primary care to imaging, clusters around it.

Mercy has a long history here. The Sisters of Mercy opened a six-bed hospital by the Animas River in 1882, the first in the Four Corners region, says CommonSpirit's history page. Today's campus sits on the east side, in Three Springs. That's why so many clinics have moved in nearby.

Where do you go in an emergency?

Call 911. If it's urgent but you can get yourself there, Mercy's emergency department is open 24/7. It sees everything from sprains to serious trauma.

For a mental health or substance use crisis, call or text 988. 988 Colorado is free and answers all day, every day. The old Colorado Crisis Services number now rings through to the same line.

How do you find a primary care doctor in Durango?

Start before you get sick. Good practices book out, and summer brings a rush of new arrivals. Here's what works:

1. Browse the listings. Local doctors are under family practice. CommonSpirit Primary Care Mercy shows a 4.8 Google rating from 278 reviews (October 2026). 2. Ask three questions. Are you taking new patients? How far out do you book? Which insurance do you accept? 3. Check the license. Colorado lets you look up any licensed professional on the state license lookup. 4. Don't forget the kids. Silver Mountain Pediatrics and 4 Corners Children's Clinic are two places to start.

Where do you get imaging, prescriptions and rehab?

Near Mercy, mostly. A few services run under the CommonSpirit name and have their own pages here:

Independent shops fill the gaps. Peak Eyecare does eyes. Animas Valley Audiology Associates does hearing.

Who handles mental health and public health?

Axis Health System lists a Durango clinic. It describes its care as running from primary care all the way to crisis care. For private counseling, browse psychologists and counselors. One example is Solum Life Therapy.

Public health goes through San Juan Basin Public Health, which covers La Plata County. It runs the Durango WIC clinic, a state food and nutrition program for pregnant women, new moms, babies and young kids.

When can you sign up for health insurance in Colorado?

November 1, 2026, to January 15, 2027. That's the open enrollment window for 2027 plans, per the state. You shop through Connect for Health Colorado. Depending on your income, you may get help paying for a plan.

How many dentists and therapists does Durango have?

A lot, per head. As of October 16, 2026, the directory lists:

That mix isn't random. A town of hikers, skiers, bikers and river rats keeps a lot of bodywork and rehab practices busy. Open a category for hours, ratings and contact details. Looking for gyms, yoga or pilates instead? See our gyms and fitness guide.

Dentists are easy to compare by reviews. Durango Dentistry has 1,439 on Google. Durango Kids Pediatric Dentistry has 687.
